South Marine Park has a boating lake, miniture steam railway, play area and an amazing gathering of swans and ducks. Souter Lighthouse

When Souter Lighthouse was switched on in 1871, it was the first lighthouse in the world specifically constructed for electric illumination by carbon arc lamps. Arbeia Roman Fort

Situated beyond Hadrian's Wall at South Shields. Arbeia Roman Fort guarded the entrance to the River Tyne. Built in AD160 the stone fort played an essential role in the mighty frontier system. Today vistors can climb the reconstructed West Gate, explore the Barrack Block and Commanding Officer's Home and see finds and re-enactments. www.twmuseums.org.uk/arbeia
